The group’s research is oriented towards the following
themes :
-
The development of national wavelength and frequency
standards in the visible and near infra-red,
-
The applications of these standards in interferometric
metrology, atomic and molecular spectroscopy
and the measurement of certain fundamental physical constants (for
example h, h/mp),
- The development of laser transfer standards for use at the BNM-LNE
(Laboratoire National d'Essais = National Testing Laboratory).
Studies and research projects:
The following studies and research projects underway
in the “length” group at BNM-INM/CNAM have been approved
by the scientific committee of the Bureau National de Métrologie
:
- The mise en pratique of the definition of the metre
- A new optical frequency standard based on a two-photon transition
in atomic silver including the
development of suitable solid-state sources around 1.3 µm (Nd
:YLF)
- A transportable refractometer
- Laser diodes stabilized to molecular iodine transitions
- Development of a diode-pumped solid-state Yb:YAG laser, frequency
doubled to generate light near 510 nm, and a fibre laser for 501.7 nm
- Design and construction of a very high resolution compact wavemeter
- Participation in the French watt balance project to measure h or redefine
the kilogramme

Calibration services providing a link to national standards:
As a national metrology laboratory NML, the BNM-INM/CNAM
is able to carry out calibrations linked to French national references.
The laboratories concerned by these links are, the
other NMLs that have no reference of their own, the laboratories of
the GIP-BNM* and accredited laboratories for which a need for a link
to national references is stipulated.
* GIP-BNM groupement d’intérêt public
BNM = the public sector umbrella group of laboratories and ministries
which make up the BNM.
International collaborations:
As well as a joint refractometry project with NIST, Gaithersburg
( http://www.nist.gov
), the length group at BNM-INM has many contacts with other laboratories
overseas, notably NPL, Teddington, UK ( http://www.npl.co.uk
) and Clarendon Laboratory, Oxford ( http://www.physics.ox.ac.uk
) with a view to future common research projects.
National collaborations:
There are common research projects with a number of French research
groups based in the Paris region. More details can be found on the
